Meet Israa

What determined your passion for design? Tell us about the moment when you decided this is the way to go.

Since I was a child, I was always interested in arts, colors, designs…etc. People always said I will be a talented artist but the moment I decided to concentrate all my efforts into interior designing was during a visit to one of the historical palaces in my country. Its design left me in awe.

It made me wonder about how a person spends months or years of his life to finish such a piece of art, how intricate details and vibrant colors can change your mood and the thoughts and emotions he must have had throughout the designing and building process.

That’s when I decided to be a designer and leave people amazed with my designs even after years.

Can you remember your first design project? Describe it a bit, whether it is a gizmo you worked at as a little kid or something that was sold at a large scale.

My first design was not a real project but it was when we moved to a new house and my father gave me the freedom to design my own room. I choose the colors, the furniture and even decided to decorate my room with my own drawings and doodles.

I was so proud of the result and loved it more than a queen’s palace because it was designed by me 😀

What field of design are you most interested in? Do your works have anything to do with it? (We are asking this because not many designers do what they actually want)

I work as an Interior Designer and it’s the field I always wanted to work in. Most of my current projects are Interior Design and I’m always seeking to improve my skills and hence continue to look for the most trending and innovative ideas.

Chronologically describe what you are going through (feeling and thoughts) on your way to work.

When I’m heading to work, I feel that I have a sensitive mission of making good designs to make people happy and satisfied with the place they’re in.

What is your favorite book/magazine on design? How about your favorite site?

I do not really have a favorite book or magazine and believe in free sources such as websites wherein I can navigate between thousands of designs and information.

My favorite site is Behance where I can learn about new ideas between millions of talented designers even though lots of them are amateurs they’re doing a pretty good job.

What is the most frustrating aspect of your job as a designer? And the most rewarding one?

The most frustrating is that you cannot convince people all the time and since I also work on commercial projects I often have to make edits requested by clients even if I don’t like it, but on the other side the most rewarding is when I receive a message from my client informing me that the design makes him happy and satisfied.

As I said before, you can change people’s mood with your colors and small details.

From your point of view, is design an art or a science?

From my point of view, a design is a combination of both.

If you have all the information and knowledge about design but you don’t have the artistic touch you will not be a good designer.

On the other hand, if you’re a talented artist but you don’t have the knowledge or don’t care about reading and learning you’ll never be good enough.

Tell us something unusual that happened in your career.

A client accepts your design without suggesting a single change on the first go. 😀

Let’s say you entered a contest. You have to come up with a design for the first house on the Moon built for extra-terrestrial living. How would your project look like?

I don’t know, maybe it will be a mix between a spaceship and a terrestrial house but I’ll be most worried about the gravity.

If you had no limits (money, resources), what would you create?

With unlimited resources, I’d like to redecorate the new buildings in Cairo that are not built with an artistic touch like some of the European buildings and turn Cairo into the beautiful city it has always been. I would also be needing a little help from Jelena Aksentijevic, she is an interior designer mastermind she has a vision nobody can match.

Share something you would like the world to know about you or your ideas.

I would like them to check my Behance account and they will know me from my designs. 😀
